Last Day in the Field

It's the last full day in the basecamp. It was a very start for the day, waking up to negative four degrees celcius, and a nice warm fire right outside the lean-too. We kept the fire going all through the night (only costing me 30 minutes) which was very nice. We had nine of us cramed into an eight person lean-too making it much warmer as well. Since my finger has gotten sliced pretty bad and started to get infected, it was put into a splint to avoid opening the wound anymore.

I miss out on the squad ski competition from that, but followed along as well as possible by foot (sinking in the snow up to my knees every step...). Instead I got many photos for them. The ski competition was very creative. There were a few different stations. First off was the egg toss (the more surviving eggs equalled time removed from the clock), followed by a target distance gauging exercise. One of the stations a squad member was picked at random to be the 'wounded member' and had to ride in the polk for the remainer of the race. Finally there was a puzzle at the last station where the squad had to figure out how to make the shape face the other direction by only moving three sticks (mainly to make sure we are still thinking under such cold situations).

Following the race we went on to pitch the tent we had constructed from individual tent peices for practice before reaching the top of the mountain. This tent requires the use of our skis and poles. It was getting very tricky since the the poles were unable to stick all the way in due to there not being enough snow. This will be continued later tonight... Sorry to cut this short, but I must be going.
